Colonial Williamsburg is a living, working city. Skilled craftsmen create items like saddles, garments and cartwheels for the use of other Colonial Williamsburg trades people and citizens; people actually live in the homes you'll pass by, and real commerce takes place within the town's many shops and taverns. Music from a tavern balladeer, delicious aromas emanating from the kitchen hearth, the taste of fresh bread from the bakery -- what you'll see during your visit is just the beginning of a full sensory trip to the past . . .

Kingsmill Resort is located 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., in Williamsburg, Virginia. The colonial capital of Virginia, Williamsburg is only a few miles from Jamestown, the site of the first permanent English settlement in North America, and Yorktown, the site of major battles of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

Across from Kingsmill is
Colonial Williamsburg, a village restored to the way it appeared in the 1700s, when Thomas Jefferson and other national leaders studied at The College of William and Mary and walked through the streets of Virginia's colonial capital.

Colonial Williamsburg features a wide variety of educational opportunities and attractions--from visits to an operating blacksmith shop and gunsmith shop to colonial dinners served by candlelight.

Beyond the historic district lies the modern town of Williamsburg, which offers a wide variety of amenities, including shopping centers, theaters and several resorts. Two major tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay are less than five miles from campus--the James River on the west and the York River on the east. Boating, fishing and other forms of outdoor recreation are readily available.

Williamsburg may be reached by automobile (off Interstate 64, east of Richmond), bus, train (Amtrak) and airplane (at the
Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport, Richmond International Airport and Norfolk International Airport).

Nearby Airports
There are three airports convenient to Williamsburg: The Richmond International Airport (RIC), Norfolk International Airport (ORF), and the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport (PHF). Richmond and Norfolk are each about an hour from the College by car; Newport News is about 40 minutes. Keep in mind that there is a tunnel between Norfolk and Williamsburg, which can sometimes cause traffic delays. Amtrak train service is available to Williamsburg from New York or Washington, D.C. If you are traveling from Washington, D.C. by car, allow three hours.

Colonial Williamsburg Tour
1:30p to 5:00p  At one crucial moment in history, becoming Americans was a choice.  Step back in time to experience the ideas and dreams of both great and everyday people on the eve of the American Revolution. The process of defining this country's values and beliefs started in Williamsburg more than 200 years ago.  In the 301 acres and more than 500 restored and reconstructed buildings of Colonial Williamsburg, you'll discover people representing actual citizens from 18th century Williamsburg.  You'll find them greeting guests at their taverns, stoking the fire outside a tenant house or judging the accused in the courts.  You'll hear them discussing British taxes, religious freedom and the alarming notion of separating - forever - from the mother country.  This is Part I of our two-day tour into the past.
Golf - The River Course
Pete Dye designed the River Course to challenge the accuracy and consistency of PGA Tour professionals, yet still be enjoyable for the average golfer. You can see how successful he was by watching the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill on national television or by taking on this 6,853-yard, par-71 shotmaker's test yourself. The terrain is pure Virginia -- rolling hills, elevated greens, thick woods and water all around.  To score well you must hit accurate tee shots and approach the greens through the air, landing the ball with precision.  See the course layout.
The Tennis Club At Kingsmill
The Kingsmill Tennis Club offers 13 beautifully maintained Fast-Dry clay courts, including two lighted stadium courts. The Tennis Club also offers two Deco-Turf all weather courts, the same surface on which the U.S. Open Championships are played. The Tennis club also offers 6 hydro courts and a new pro-shop. Private and semi-private lessons are also available.
The Spa at Kingsmill
The Spa at Kingsmill offers a complete spa experience in state-of-the-art facilities designed with your complete comfort and privacy in mind. A comprehensive array of restorative services are available, including massages, body and skin treatments, and specialized nail and hair treatments. Along with these personal services, The Spa offers spacious wet suites including steam rooms, saunas and whirlpools. Also enjoy an invigorating cardiovascular workout in our fitness center or our spectacular indoor swimming pool.

Fri -- 7:00p
Busses board from 6:45p to 7:15p

Dinner at one of the largest maritime history museums in the world. The Mariners' Museum houses more than 35,000 sea-related items.  For 70 years, the museum has chronicled the spirit of seafaring adventure, assembling an amazing collection of maritime artifacts; figureheads, scrimshaw, hand-crafted ship models, decorative arts, prints, paintings, and small craft from around the world.  We will sail through the museum, and have cocktails and dinner in the Great Hall.

PATRICK HENRY, our guest speaker, is most remembered for saying "Give me liberty, or give me death." Born in 1736, Mr. Henry will share his experiences in Virginia as a lawyer, patriot, orator, and a living symbol of the American struggle for liberty and self-government.

ETHICS 1: ABA'S MODEL RULE ON MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL PRACTICE
Impact on Unauthorized Practice of Law Statutes

Whether it's an insurer's captive law firm, a corporation's law department, or the consulting arm of a law firm, this rule has much to argue over.  Our discussion will also focus on the issue of in-house counsel licensed in one state handling out-of-state litigation or giving advice to an out-of-state subsidiary, and their exposure to liability for unauthorized practice of law.  State sovereignty issues as impediments to broad adoption of the rule.

TOTAL RECALL: THE CPSC AND WHEN YOU MUST REPORT

The Liberty Bell, an icon of the New Republic, was cracked but not sufficiently defective to impair the Revolution it symbolized. Ironically, rules promulgated by the new government it heralded would have caused the bell to be scrapped at the foundry and the defect reported to protect the citizenry lest the bell and others like it break and injure a ringer or passerby. Although the bell withstood two centuries without such a calamity, government rules now require consumer product manufacturers to evaluate their products and report defects. Penalties for failing to report can be quite a corporate lashing. No need to Whig out, though. The Consumer Product Safety Commission's rules and practices concerning recalls and recall–related issues are manageable.

Golf - The Plantation Course
Golf legend Arnold Palmer teamed up with renowned golf course architect Ed Seay to create a slightly more forgiving version of The River Course to appeal to golfers of all abilities. The Plantation Course is more wide open, less demanding of pinpoint accuracy, but it's certainly no pushover. At 6,543 yards, there is less emphasis on well-positioned drives than accurate and consistent iron play and perfect putting on the undulating greens. Water comes into play on eight of the 18 holes, and there is no shortage of deep woods or rolling terrain.  The Plantation Course is fun, challenging and meticulously maintained. Historical landmarks from a 1736 plantation are woven into the landscape. See the course layout.
